Happy Trails
Happy new year! My family welcomed in 2021 by hitting the trails. Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge had been on my bucket list for years. It turned out even prettier and better marked than expected. The Rimrock trail also gained some elevation! In this area, it’s hard to find non-flat trails, but this one gains a little altitude and the view from the top is beautiful. On a nice, sunny day, it was a perfectly peaceful way to usher in 2021.
The wildlife refuge spans 27,500 acres and serves as a preserve for several bird species, including the endangered black-capped vireo and golden-cheeked warbler. (No pets are allowed.) The expanse stretches east to west between Marble Falls and Liberty Hill and north to south between Bertram and Lago Vista. So, there is more than one access point for trails and wildlife viewing.
We visited the Doeskin Ranch section of the preserve and took the 2.2 mile Rimrock Trail through shady, forested areas and up a few switchbacks to pretty views of the rolling countryside. From there, the Indiangrass Trail continues for another 1.5 miles through prairieland at the top of the ridge. We plan to return in the spring during wildflower season and take the Creek Trail at the hill’s base, too.
In the meantime, you’ll find me venturing into the other sections of the preserve!
